Kentucky basketball is entering a pivotal offseason as Mark Pope approaches his third year in charge. The upcoming season could determine his future with the program, making this transfer portal cycle especially important. If the roster isn’t significantly improved, there’s a real chance Pope won’t be back for a fourth season. With that pressure in mind, every roster decision—both departures and additions—carries major weight.

The first step in navigating the transfer portal is figuring out which players will remain with the program. The coaching staff is currently holding end-of-season meetings with each player, a process that will likely lead to several roster changes in the days leading up to the portal’s opening on April 7. As of now, only one departure has been officially confirmed: point guard Jaland Lowe. His time at Kentucky was brief, lasting just one season that was heavily impacted by injury. While more exits are expected, the full picture is still developing and should become clearer soon.

On the other side, there are already a few players expected to return. Following Kentucky’s loss to Iowa State, Pope expressed hope that certain key players would stay, including Collin Chandler and Malachi Moreno. While neither has formally announced their decision yet, there are positive signs for the Wildcats. Meanwhile, Braydon Hawthorne and Reece Potter have already confirmed their intentions to remain with the program. Both players spent last season redshirting, and their return provides some level of continuity. It’s also unlikely that the coaching staff would push them out, especially given the program’s financial limitations compared to last year.

Of course, roster stability will also depend on how successful Kentucky is in attracting new talent through the transfer portal. With key contributors like Denzel Aberdeen and Otega Oweh moving on, there are at least two major roles that need to be filled. That number could grow, particularly since Kentucky currently lacks incoming high school recruits.

Several potential transfer targets have already emerged. One of the most notable is Miles Byrd, the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year. His strong defensive presence makes him an appealing option, especially considering Pope’s past success with players from San Diego State. Byrd brings a well-rounded game, averaging 10 points, four rebounds, two blocks, and a steal per contest.

Another name to watch is Camren Hunter, a proven scorer. He had a productive run at Central Arkansas before a short and unsuccessful stint at Wisconsin. After returning to Central Arkansas, he regained form, averaging over 20 points per game last season. His ability to generate offense could help address Kentucky’s scoring needs.

Finley Bizjack from Butler is also on the radar. While his scoring numbers are solid at 17 points per game, they come with some efficiency concerns. He required a high volume of shots and posted a modest field goal percentage, meaning Kentucky would need to evaluate his fit carefully.

As more updates emerge, both the list of departures and targets will continue to evolve. For now, it’s clear that this offseason will play a crucial role in shaping Kentucky’s future.
