Not every championship comes with the bright lights of the NCAA Tournament but that doesn’t take away from how meaningful they are.

While most of the sport’s attention was glued to the Final Four, the Auburn Tigers and West Virginia Mountaineers wrapped up their seasons with exactly what every team chases in March: a trophy, a celebration, and a reason to believe even bigger things could be on the horizon. And the way each team earned it made the moment feel real.

Auburn refused to let its season slip away
For Stephen Pearl and Auburn, there was a stretch where it felt like the night and the season might drift out of reach.

They jumped out to a strong lead over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, only to see it evaporate as Tulsa stormed back and took control late. It was the kind of momentum swing that usually ends a season in frustration and regret.

But Auburn pushed back.

Auburn and West Virginia found their own March endings with championship moments

Kevin Overton’s clutch three-pointer didn’t just tie the game it revived the Tigers. The energy shifted instantly. In overtime, Auburn looked like the steadier team again, closing out a 92–86 win and securing the program’s first-ever NIT championship.

Tahaad Pettiford’s creation, the rebounding advantage, the balanced scoring all of it played a part. But the biggest factor was Auburn’s refusal to fold when the pressure peaked.

For a team that weathered its share of ups and downs this season, that resilience may be what defines next year.

West Virginia rode the best player on the floor
Some games are won through clean execution. Others hinge on one player taking over.

That’s exactly what happened with West Virginia against the Oklahoma Sooners.

Honor Huff didn’t just put up numbers he dominated every defining moment. Big shots, momentum-stopping answers, late free throws. He handled it all. Thirty-eight points, eight threes, flawless at the stripe. It felt like the game was in his hands regardless of the score.

And once overtime began, West Virginia wasted no time, ripping off a 13–0 run to seal it.

But it wasn’t only Huff. His confidence spread to the whole roster. A team not known for its shooting suddenly began firing fearlessly, embracing the moment rather than tightening up.

These championships feel like the start of something
It’s easy to let all the attention fall on the NCAA champion this time of year that stage will always be the biggest.

But for programs like Auburn and West Virginia, these wins can spark something meaningful.

Auburn now has evidence it can deliver under pressure. West Virginia has a performance and a run that show exactly what this group looks like when everything comes together.

Those things matter. They influence offseason momentum, roster decisions, and expectations.

They also change the story players carry with them.

Because long after the brackets fade away, both teams can say the same thing:

They ended their season by winning.
