Former Auburn Tigers head coach and current program ambassador Bruce Pearl found himself deeply moved by the atmosphere at this year’s Final Four. Watching the energetic crowds in Indianapolis fans of the champion Michigan Wolverines, runner-up UConn Huskies, the Illinois Fighting Illini, and even the passionate Indiana Hoosiers supporters still riding high from their College Football Playoff win made Pearl wish Americans showed the same energy toward their federal government.
With an unpopular overseas conflict underway one Pearl personally backs but many Americans oppose he urged citizens to rediscover a shared patriotism similar to the camaraderie seen in college athletics. Speaking on Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich, he said:

“There was a time when we loved our country the way Hoosier fans loved winning the national championship this year. Even when we criticized our coaches, we still found unity—we showed up and supported. What I saw in Indianapolis—the dedication of fans from Michigan, Illinois, UConn—that passion is something we used to feel about our country. We need to bring that passion and gratitude back.”

In truth, Pearl has been voicing this message long before the current conflict began. A Boston native, he’s consistently advocated for national pride. Still, he may not be the ideal spokesperson at a time when many Americans are losing jobs to AI and young service members are being sent abroad.
One of the strengths of the United States, however, is the freedom to criticize the government—and Pearl’s perspective is part of that same democratic process.
He’s simply expressing his view, and he did so during an interview rather than a major broadcast. His desire for unity isn’t misguided, even if he may be overlooking the reasons many people don’t feel aligned with the federal government or national identity at this moment. His message may not fully hit the mark, but speaking up isn’t inherently wrong.
