Brought in to finally stabilize Philadelphia’s outfield, Garcia unintentionally made some fans nostalgic for Nick Castellanos’ defensive adventures in right field.

Garcia finished the opening series against his former team with just one hit in 11 at bats and struck out five times.

As the Phillies cycled through outfielders such as Johan Rojas, Harrison Bader, Austin Hays, Max Kepler and Castellanos in recent years, they struggled to find steady production. Hoping to fix that problem, they gave Garcia a one year, $10 million contract.

“Great team, great town,” Garcia said back in December. “I’m just ready to go and contribute.”

But in the season’s first series, he looked nothing like the Texas Rangers’ 2023 World Series standout. And in Philadelphia, a rough debut can be hard for fans to forgive.

With the Washington Nationals (2–1) coming to town for a three-game set starting Monday night, Garcia will have another chance to win over  or further test Philadelphia’s notoriously tough crowd.

They’ll be keeping a close eye on him.
