Wildcats Land First Commitment Under New Kansas State Coach Casey Alexander

Just weeks after rumors surfaced that he might be reconsidering his commitment, one of Casey Alexander’s priority recruits has now officially pledged to join the Wildcats.

Former Belmont head coach Casey Alexander, introduced as the new leader of the Kansas State men’s basketball program on March 16, has sparked major conversations about recruiting  and we’re already seeing the first results of his influence.

Kansas State head coach Casey Alexander strikes right tone

Since arriving in Manhattan, Alexander has emphasized the importance of bringing in young talent. So far, he’s following through. As he previously stated, the staff wants to sign top-tier high school players  and keep them in the program.

His mindset mirrors the “old school” approach new football head coach Collin Klein is bringing back, though Klein enters with the advantage of being a former Heisman Trophy finalist at Kansas State. Alexander doesn’t have that built-in connection  at least, not yet.

Speculation began swirling on March 18 when Devin Hutcherson asked to be released from his national letter of intent, less than a week after Alexander stepped into the Wildcats job.

Coaching changes often create uncertainty, and this situation is no exception. In college athletics, players frequently commit because of the coach and the vision presented, not just the school’s name or colors. While a few exceptions exist, it’s rare.

Hutcherson’s announcement appears to be just the beginning. Kansas State is expected to pursue several more additions, both from high school recruits and potential transfers whose decisions remain pending.

Uncertainty Ahead of the NCAA Tournament

The transfer portal doesn’t officially open until April 6, right after the national championship game. That window gives current players   whether still competing or weighing their next steps  time to consider their futures.

So far, the only public statements from prospective transfers or former Belmont athletes involve their intent to enter the portal, not official entry. Many athletes ultimately withdraw, as seen with Kansas standout Flory Bidunga, who surprised many by returning after the 2024–25 season.

Former Belmont players like Tyler Lundblade or Drew Scharnowski could still remain, depending on how things unfold.

There’s also a small chance that some of former head coach Jerome Tang’s recruits stay on, meaning players like P.J. Haggerty could return. However, without the coach who recruited them, it’s unlikely  though still possible in today’s NIL-driven environment.

Reports suggest Alexander plans to meet with every returning player from last season who still has eligibility. Still, he emphasized that any continuation “must be the right fit for both the player and the program moving forward.”
