The pace of college basketball has never been faster, and for former Kentucky Mr. Basketball Travis Perry, his college path has officially taken on a journeyman feel. After beginning his career at Kentucky and transferring to Ole Miss following just one season, he’s now decided that Oxford isn’t the right fit either. In fact, Perry appears to have concluded that the SEC, as a whole, may no longer suit him.

The Eddyville native has now made his next move official, and it brings him much closer to home. According to On3, Perry has committed to play for head coach Anthony Grant and the Dayton Flyers.

The SEC Stats Don’t Lie
When Perry left Kentucky for Ole Miss, the hope was that a fresh start under Chris Beard would benefit the guard. And to some degree, it did though not as much as either side had hoped. Perry’s numbers did improve, but they still reflected a player trying to find his rhythm in the nation’s toughest conference:

  • 2024-25 (Kentucky): 2.7 PPG, 0.6 AST, 32.1% from three in 9.8 minutes

  • 2025-26 (Ole Miss): 5.3 PPG, 1.1 AST, 35.3% from three in 16.4 minutes

Although he started 16 games for the Rebels and showed more flashes of brilliance, it wasn’t until the SEC Tournament that Perry truly stepped into a significant role. From the second round onward playing 19 minutes against Texas, 30 against Georgia, 33 against Alabama, and 37 against Arkansas he proved that, despite a rocky season, he could contribute when given real opportunity.

Why Kentucky Wasn’t in the Picture
Whenever an in-state player enters the transfer portal, Kentucky fans naturally wonder about a possible reunion, even in a limited role. But this time around, the Wildcats were never a serious option. The truth is, Perry’s playing style and Mark Pope’s coaching approach don’t align—hence his original departure. Some players simply don’t thrive under Pope’s system, especially those coming off the bench with limited minutes. But Dayton, competing in the Atlantic 10, could be a perfect match.

A Great Fit in the A-10
Moving to Dayton may be the smartest decision Perry could make heading into his junior season. Under Coach Grant, the Flyers have been a balanced team, but they struggled with outside shooting this past year ranking 182nd nationally in three-point percentage and 200th in three-pointers made per game. Perry should slide right in and provide the shooting help Dayton desperately needs.

Kentucky fans will always root for the local kid, and a short drive up to Ohio to watch him succeed in a Dayton uniform might be a fitting end to his winding college journey. That is, unless the Wildcats face the Flyers then all bets are off. Otherwise, Big Blue Nation can comfortably cheer for their former Cat.
