Mark Pope’s ambitious vision for the centerpiece of Kentucky’s lineup came to an end when Tyran Stokes chose Lawrence, Kansas, over Lexington. For a fleeting moment, the idea of a miraculous fifth season from Otega Oweh seemed plausible but that hope quickly faded as well.

5-Star Wing Ryan Hampton Schedules An In-Home Visit With Kentucky!

That left Kentucky with a solid roster, yet potentially lacking a true game-changing star. With unspent NIL resources originally set aside for Stokes and an open spot for an impact player, the Wildcats are now searching for someone to step into a role that was never actually filled.

In my view, Pope and his coaching staff should turn their attention to five-star wing Ryan Hampton. Kentucky recently hosted the rising star for an in-campus visit, and if they can convince him to reclassify and join this season’s squad, he could be the solution to their need for a superstar.

Solving the Superstar Void
This isn’t to dismiss someone like Alex Wilkins—a promising guard with a year of experience who could grow into a similar role. But Hampton would give Kentucky a dynamic playmaker equipped with the instincts and the pressure-ready mindset to lead immediately.

A quick glance at Hampton’s recent highlights tells Big Blue Nation everything needed about this versatile prospect. Playing small forward, he combines impressive length with the composure to find his spots and finish over defenders with ease.

He possesses a tight dribbling skill set, a smooth pull-up jumper, and the ability to attack downhill with force. Regardless of any critiques about his build, Hampton carries a national reputation for a reason. Landing him would be a massive coup for Kentucky especially if Pope can bring him into this year’s class.

With Hampton, Kentucky becomes a truly formidable team.

One Piece Away
As far as we know, the Wildcats remain in the hunt for Hampton, along with other suitors such as LSU and SMU. LSU, in particular given that its roster currently includes just one player, former Wildcat Mo Dioubate may be in even more desperate need than any other program pursuing Hampton.

Still, this is a situation Kentucky must seize. Outmaneuver a program that would typically be considered beneath them and secure the kind of commitment that could reshape the trajectory of Pope’s third season—and potentially his entire tenure.
