Following the dismissal of manager Rob Thomson, the Philadelphia Phillies have managed to win their most recent games, but they still face an uphill battle to re-enter playoff contention. Their record remains 12–19, placing them 9.5 games behind the top spot in the National League East.
They also trail by six games in the wild-card race. Unsurprisingly, a dramatic turnaround will be necessary for a postseason return, and although plenty of the season remains, now would be an ideal time to start closing the sizable deficit they’ve created for themselves.
The situation has deteriorated to the point where three-time NL MVP Bryce Harper is being mentioned in hypothetical trade talks. If the Phillies decided to move him, they could command an enormous return. Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report suggested several potential landing spots for Harper, including the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Rymer wrote, “There’s no way Ildemaro Vargas keeps this up. He’s been tearing it up with a 23-game hit streak and a .378 average overall, but he’s also a 34-year-old who had a career 78 OPS+ before this season. Once Vargas’ early-season magic inevitably dries up, the Snakes will need a proven middle-of-the-order threat to help Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo shoulder the burden in their offense.”
What Could the Phillies Receive for Harper?
Clearly, Philadelphia would need an overwhelming offer to even entertain trading Harper. Despite their current struggles, the team still has many strong pieces in place, which could allow them to rebound easily in 2027.
However, Harper’s five remaining years of club control would significantly boost his trade value. If the Phillies consider moving him, they hold the leverage to set a high price and secure the best possible package.
Only under those circumstances would the Phillies consider a trade. If they did, they could acquire a haul that would set them up well for the future. Should they fail to reverse their fortunes, many tough questions will need answering by the trade deadline especially regarding the possibility of dealing Harper.

Harper’s Potential Fit with the Diamondbacks
Arizona is an intriguing team. While they aren’t on the same level as the Los Angeles Dodgers or San Diego Padres, they should at least be in the wild-card conversation.
Thus, Harper would have a chance to join a contender, though it remains uncertain whether the Diamondbacks are enough of a contender for him to waive his no-trade clause.
That certainly complicates matters, but Arizona possesses a strong farm system that could help facilitate a potential deal.
We’ll have to see where things stand by the deadline and whether any trade ultimately materializes.
