The Cubs are making a quick, single-series stop in Philadelphia.
SCORING BY INNING: Chicago scored in five different innings on Sunday, their second-highest total this season (they scored in six innings last Tuesday in Tampa). They pushed across two runs in two separate innings yesterday, giving them 24 innings this year with exactly two runs scored. They’ve produced more than two runs in an inning 13 times, but only once in their last 88 innings — the five-run fifth last Wednesday in Tampa. (Stats via BCB’s JohnW53.)

RUN DIFFERENTIAL: The Cubs enter tonight at +10 in run differential. Only five teams currently rank higher: the Braves (+46), Dodgers (+35), Yankees (+21), Brewers (+16) and Padres (+14). Chicago is tied with Detroit at +10.
THE NICO FILES: Nico Hoerner is riding a 14-game on-base streak while hitting .340/.446/.528 (18-for-53) with seven doubles, a homer, 10 RBI and nine walks. He has reached base in every game this season except Opening Day.
WHAT A RELIEF: Chicago’s bullpen didn’t give up an earned run in the last two games vs. Pittsburgh (only an unearned extra-inning run Saturday). Over nine combined innings in those matchups, Cubs relievers allowed five hits, four walks (1.000 WHIP), and struck out 11.
MATCHUP: Javier Assad, RHP vs. Cristopher Sánchez, LHP
Javier Assad answered the call when Cade Horton went on the IL, delivering 5.2 scoreless innings with one hit and two walks in his start last Tuesday against Tampa. Across 79 career games (55 starts), he’s been incredibly steady with season ERAs ranging from 3.03 to 3.73 and generally keeps the Cubs competitive.
His previous outing vs. Philadelphia (Sept. 25, 2024) was rough, but a better showing is expected tonight.
Cristopher Sánchez broke out in 2025, posting 8.0 bWAR and finishing second in NL Cy Young voting. He’s kept that form in 2026, logging a 1.65 ERA with 23 strikeouts, four walks, and no home runs allowed over 16.1 innings. His last appearance against Chicago was that same 2024 meeting; he gave up three runs (one earned) over 4.2 innings, including a Nico Hoerner home run.
Cubs hitters will face a difficult challenge.
