Kansas and Kentucky have been locked in a long-running recruiting battle for 2026’s No. 1 overall prospect, Tyran Stokes, and despite postponing his announcement earlier this year, he still hasn’t revealed where he’ll play next season. However, his latest campus stop may signal that a decision is getting closer.

Stokes visited Kentucky over the weekend, and based on his Instagram Live, the trip made a strong impression. While inside Rupp Arena, he streamed himself taking shots, throwing down dunks, and watching the Wildcats’ hype video flash across the jumbotron.
A visit alone doesn’t secure a commitment, but it has been a while since Stokes was at Kansas. With Bill Self now focused on rebuilding a depleted roster through the transfer portal, the Jayhawks’ grip on the top prospect may be slipping. When Self announced he would return to Kansas, many thought that might lock in Stokes. Though Stokes acknowledged the news online, he’s been silent about his recruitment since right up until the announcement of his Lexington visit.
Stokes’ recruiting saga may push Bill Self toward Dylan Mingo
Stokes appears to be putting both Kansas and Kentucky through an exhausting back-and-forth, and eventually each program will need to decide whether the chase is worth it. Self already has four incoming freshmen and is juggling portal additions; he can’t afford to devote all his time to one undecided recruit. As talented as Stokes is, his timeline is dragging on.
This could be the opening for Kansas to pivot toward Dylan Mingo, the No. 2 player in the 2026 class, who recently reopened his recruitment after months as a UNC commit. His brother, Kayden Mingo, is currently in the transfer portal—if Self can bring him to Lawrence, it might increase the chances of landing Dylan as well.
