The Dodgers have already dabbled in some low-risk roster moves this season, cycling through waiver claims and quick DFA decisions in hopes of uncovering their next reclamation project. Earlier this month, they picked up reliever Grant Holman from the Diamondbacks, only to designate him for assignment shortly after and lose him to the Tigers within two weeks.

On Tuesday, they took another flier—this time via trade—acquiring right-hander Griff McGarry from the Phillies in exchange for international bonus pool money and future considerations, which could be cash or a player to be named later. Like Holman, McGarry isn’t a guaranteed long-term piece, but he brings a more notable background.

Selected in the fifth round of the 2021 draft, McGarry entered the Phillies’ system as a top-10 prospect in 2022 and climbed as high as No. 3 in 2023. Though his stock dipped, he still held a top-30 ranking through 2025 before being taken by the Nationals in the Rule 5 Draft this past offseason.

Washington ultimately couldn’t keep him on the roster after spring training, leading to his DFA and return to Philadelphia in March. The Phillies appeared willing to keep him, but the Dodgers stepped in to acquire him.

That move is what sets McGarry apart from some of Los Angeles’ more routine pickups. Rather than simply claiming a player off waivers, the Dodgers actively targeted him, suggesting they see untapped potential.

His decline in prospect rankings is understandable. After quickly rising to Triple-A in just his second pro season, he struggled with a 9.00 ERA over eight innings and dealt with injuries, rehab assignments, and time on the development list.

Even so, the Dodgers have built a reputation for unlocking talent others have given up on. McGarry won’t need to be added to the 40-man roster and can head straight to Triple-A, where he’ll now be developed within a system known for turning overlooked players into valuable contributors.
