Many Auburn Tigers fans may be feeling uneasy after USF Bulls transfer Byrum Brown delivered a shaky performance during Saturday’s A-Day spring scrimmage at Jordan–Hare Stadium. Completing just half of his passes and tossing two interceptions, Brown showed more warning signs than flashes of brilliance.

However, as AL.com’s Jerry Humphrey III pointed out, Cam Newton also struggled in his lone A-Day appearance back in 2010. Humphrey did note, though, that Oregon State Beavers transfer Tristan Ti’a turned in a standout showing.

According to Humphrey, Newton’s career proves that a rough spring game doesn’t define a quarterback’s future or indicate how Auburn’s offense will operate in the fall. Still, after backup QB Ti’a completed all but five of his passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns, Brown will need a strong fall camp to erase the memory of his A-Day outing.

Like Newton, Brown arrives from a Florida-based program—though Newton came from SEC rival Florida Gators—and Brown also enters with one year of eligibility. Maybe it’s a positive sign that both quarterbacks disappointed in their first Jordan–Hare showing when the results didn’t matter.

Auburn can only hope Ti’a becomes a clearer successor than what Newton left behind after 2011.

No reasonable Tigers fan believes there’s an actual quarterback battle brewing in East Central Alabama. Alex Golesh and Joel Gordon knew who their starter would be the moment they arrived. It has always been Brown—and it will remain Brown.

Once Brown settles in, which Auburn expects to happen before September, he becomes the central figure in determining whether the Tigers reemerge as contenders or continue their slide out of the national picture. His spring struggles may simply add urgency to getting him fully comfortable as quickly as possible.

The Cam Newton comparison is worth keeping in mind: Brown still has a prime opportunity to become Auburn’s long-awaited answer at quarterback.
