Despite the disapproving reactions from Florida Gators fans when Denzel Aberdeen transferred to Kentucky, head coach Todd Golden held no grudges. In fact, the departure opened the door for Golden to bring Aberdeen back to Florida.

After spending just one season with the Wildcats, Aberdeen who was awaiting NCAA approval for an extra year of eligibility entered the transfer portal. Nearly a year after leaving Florida, he announced his return on April 10. Speaking on Tuesday, Golden explained, “We missed each other last season. In this evolving landscape of revenue sharing and NIL deals, conversations aren’t always perfect. We went our separate ways, and that’s just how this business works right now.”

Though Golden described the split as amicable, Aberdeen’s exit over NIL disagreements stands out as a major roster shift. After three seasons as a reserve and helping Florida win a national title with expectations he’d start the following year Aberdeen left for Kentucky due to NIL issues. In his sole season with the Wildcats, he posted career highs of 13.5 points per game while shooting over 36% from three-point range. Golden praised his consistency, noting that despite Kentucky’s injuries and lineup changes, Aberdeen delivered every night and made a significant leap from his bench role at Florida.

That growth, along with his familiarity with Golden’s system, made bringing him back an easy decision. Golden noted Aberdeen understands their operations well, and his three-point shooting is a bonus. He also returns to a locker room full of familiar faces, including retained stars Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh, plus bench contributors Urban Klavzar and Isaiah Brown. According to Golden, the players who were at Florida when Aberdeen left never took it personally.

“Denzel loves his teammates and appreciates our staff and program. There were no hard feelings between us,” Golden said. “Our conversation was quick: ‘Want to come back?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Great, let’s go.'”

However, Aberdeen is not yet fully cleared to play. Despite logging only 40.8 total minutes across 12 games as a true freshman, he technically has no remaining eligibility, prompting the NCAA waiver request. Golden is optimistic, calling it a “common-sense situation” and pointing to potential NCAA rule changes allowing five seasons in five years. He emphasized, “This isn’t a 27-year-old on his sixth school trying to play an eighth year. This is a 22-year-old returning for his degree within his five-year clock. If he had played 30 games at 15 minutes a night, we wouldn’t be asking. Common sense should resolve this quickly.”

Golden acknowledged that seeking a court ruling would be a “last resort,” but he doesn’t expect it to come to that. For now, Aberdeen is back and projected to join a starting lineup featuring guard Boogie Fland, Haugh, Condon, and potentially Rueben Chinyelu (if he withdraws from the NBA Draft). Sharpshooter Klavzar and rising sophomore Alex Lloyd, who Golden expects to make big strides, will round out the guard rotation. “We have a lot of pieces who will jump forward,” Golden said. “Zel returning, Urb’s strong year, and young players like Boog and Lloyd will all take incremental steps next season.”
