After Florida State’s spring camp wrapped up, head coach Mike Norvell named Auburn transfer quarterback Ashton Daniels the starter. The move brought the kind of validation you’d expect for a program that turned to a veteran portal QB to help steady a team coming off consecutive losing seasons.

There’s been plenty of concern that Daniels’ ceiling might be closer to the floor in terms of playmaking. But from the coaching staff’s perspective, there’s optimism that the floor itself is much higher, thanks to his experience. That said, the staff played things remarkably close to the vest Norvell said during his end-of-spring press conference that the Seminoles were still undecided, only to name Daniels the starter just days later.

What’s Daniels’ Ceiling?

Daniels brings four years of starting experience three at Stanford and one at Auburn in 2025. In total, he’s appeared in 37 games with 23 starts and holds an average PFF grade of 71.9. His standout moments include last year’s Iron Bowl against Alabama, where he racked up 367 total yards and a touchdown in a 27–20 loss, and a near-flawless 442 total yards with four touchdowns in a 45–38 overtime loss to Vanderbilt. That’s the ceiling on paper. For FSU to get above .500, reach bowl eligibility, or meet the standard fans expect, Daniels would likely need to deliver similar performances across the schedule.

Nobody should anticipate a perfect season. The floor drops sharply if the passing game stumbles Daniels has been prone to interceptions in the past, throwing two in just four games in 2025.

The good news: Daniels is an athletic runner with 1,397 career rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. He can also stretch the field, and Florida State brings back star receivers Duce Robinson and Micahi Danzy, who can challenge defenses deep. Norvell’s offense has evolved only slightly over the years based on personnel. Expect him to use a baseline play-calling approach that lets Daniels scramble behind an offensive line with new starters at every position. Daniels’ mobility and experience across different systems should give Robinson and Danzy more time to get open. As a run-first offense, RPOs off running backs Ousmane Kromah, Quintrevion Wisner, and Sam Singleton Jr. will also set up shot plays for Daniels.

Daniels Lowers Risk, Even If He Doesn’t Raise the Bar

On paper, Daniels is a serviceable quarterback. With Norvell entering a make-or-break season reclaiming play-calling duties alongside Tim Harris Jr. operational consistency isn’t just preferable; it’s essential. After a 5–7 finish in 2025, despite fielding one of the ACC’s top offenses, Daniels gives Florida State a path to stability, even if the margin for error stays narrow. He may not elevate FSU’s ceiling to championship heights, but he significantly lowers the risk of the offense collapsing. For a program trying to reestablish stability, that’s arguably the most important step forward. Ultimately, this move isn’t about chasing upside it’s about avoiding setbacks. Florida State is betting that steady quarterback play can translate into wins. But in a season with little room for error, the line between reliable and underwhelming could determine just how far the 2026 Seminole offense can go.
