One of the most celebrated players in Kentucky basketball history will be joining another college program’s staff when the 2026–27 season tips off. John Wall has been named president of basketball operations at Howard University, located in Washington, D.C. the city where Wall spent most of his professional career after leaving Kentucky as the NBA’s No. 1 overall pick in 2010. ESPN first reported Wall’s addition to Howard’s basketball staff, noting that Wall has already adopted a “hands-on approach” to the role. He is actively involved in evaluating recruits and transfer portal targets, while also assisting with overall roster management strategy, NIL discussions, and player mentorship, among other duties.

Kenny Blakeney, a former Duke player and Washington, D.C., native, has served as Howard’s head coach since 2019. Under his leadership, the Bison have made the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four seasons. Last year, Howard won a First Four game before falling to top-seeded Michigan who went on to win the national title in the round of 64. Wall was born and raised in North Carolina but has strong ties to Washington, D.C., where he became a household name after being selected first overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2010 NBA Draft. He spent nine seasons with the Wizards, earning five All-Star nods before injuries cut his career short.

During five of his All-Star seasons, the Wizards reached the playoffs, and Wall became the face of the franchise while remaining deeply involved in the D.C. community. He later played parts of two seasons with the Houston Rockets and LA Clippers before officially retiring last year, though he hadn’t appeared in an NBA game since 2023. As his playing career wound down, Wall returned to the Kentucky basketball scene, attending several games during John Calipari’s final season as UK’s coach in 2023–24 to show support for his former mentor. He has also backed current Kentucky coach Mark Pope, making a surprise appearance at last year’s Big Blue Madness, where he recreated the dance he famously performed at the same event in 2009 before his stellar freshman season as a Wildcat. Wall helped lead Kentucky to a 35–3 record in Calipari’s first year as head coach, steering the program back to national prominence after several subpar seasons. Kentucky reached the Final Four in 2011 the year after Wall left marking the Wildcats’ first trip to the national semifinals in 13 years.

Wall’s hiring at Howard comes as Pope, facing criticism after a disappointing second season as Kentucky’s coach, reshuffles his staff and seeks a new approach to roster building. Pope is replacing two assistant coaches this offseason following the departures of Alvin Brooks III and Jason Hart, and has already hired former NBA All-Star Mo Williams for one of those roles. Pope has also brought on Keegan Brown, who worked under him at BYU, as UK’s director of roster management a position focused on helping the coaching staff evaluate talent for future Kentucky teams. Brown, most recently the video coordinator for the Milwaukee Bucks’ G League affiliate, held a similar role at BYU. Pope is expected to hire at least one more person to assist with roster management and player negotiations this offseason.
