The Detroit Tigers currently have the best pitcher in the world, Tarik Skubal, on their roster. However, his contract runs out at the end of this season, and he’s expected to command a deal worth over $400 million in free agency next offseason. Because of this, Skubal is almost guaranteed to leave Detroit once the season ends.

That leaves the Tigers with two paths forward this year. Option one: keep him and try to make a playoff run, as they’ve done recently. Option two: trade him for a massive return of prospects.

If Skubal gets injured before the season ends, Detroit would be stuck holding onto him. He wouldn’t be able to help a postseason push—crushing their World Series hopes—nor would he serve as a trade chip.

On Wednesday, Skubal appeared to feel some discomfort in his throwing arm, motioning for his catcher to come out to the mound. He finished the game, but the injury scare might push the Tigers to reconsider trading him.

So where could he land?

Los Angeles Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts
The Dodgers are the obvious frontrunner. They have the financial flexibility to re-sign him after the season, they’re built to win now, and they’ve shown a willingness to make bold moves. They also boast one of baseball’s best farm systems. A potential package could include Tyler Glasnow, Dalton Rushing, and other prospects to entice Detroit. Adding Skubal would make the Dodgers even heavier favorites for a championship, and they’d be strong contenders to lock him up long-term in the offseason.

New York Yankees

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone
The Yankees might be the only team that can prevent Skubal from landing with the Dodgers. They could offer Luis Gil, Jasson Domínguez, and prospects. The main hurdle would be affording his next contract, but the front office might go all-in for a title if Skubal becomes available. Aaron Judge remains the game’s best hitter, and the Yankees can’t afford to squander his prime. Adding a superstar like Skubal could be the missing piece for another World Series win.

Atlanta Braves

The Braves have been a nice surprise this season, but they need more firepower to surpass the Dodgers. Given their many pitching injuries, Skubal would be a huge boost. They lack the same caliber of major-league-ready trade chips, but GM Alex Anthopoulos might get creative. Landing Skubal would certainly strengthen their World Series chances.
