According to Shams Charania, the Detroit Pistons are expected to pursue a star player this offseason, with Lauri Markkanen emerging as a potential target. The Pistons are reportedly seeking players who align with their young core, and both Markkanen and Trey Murphy III fit that description.
As with any trade rumor, Detroit’s interest in Markkanen doesn’t guarantee a deal unless they’re willing to meet a steep asking price. However, with the Utah Jazz aiming to be competitive next season, trading Markkanen now seems far less probable. If anything, the cost to acquire him would likely be even higher than before.
Still, a few factors leave the door slightly ajar. First, there’s the upcoming draft lottery. If Utah jumps into the top 3 or 4 and lands someone like Cam Boozer or Caleb Wilson, the Jazz would suddenly have a logjam at power forward alongside Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. In that scenario, a package from Detroit featuring Ausar Thompson and a significant haul of picks especially given the new lottery rules that make every pick potentially a No. 1 overall could give Utah something to think about. If they believe a rookie can replicate Markkanen’s production, a trade becomes at least conceivable.

Second, Markkanen’s massive contract isn’t an immediate issue for Utah, but it could create future problems. Walker Kessler’s extension remains uncertain, and Keyonte George if he continues his breakout season will command a hefty raise. Balancing those salaries down the line might force tough decisions.
That said, a Markkanen trade this season still feels unlikely. The Jazz are in no hurry to shake things up and will be pushing hard for a playoff run. Even if they land a top-4 pick, having a talent like Boozer come off the bench would be a luxury, not a problem.

In all likelihood, Utah only moves Markkanen if a team like Detroit makes an offer too good to refuse an outcome that doesn’t seem realistic at this point. It’s worth keeping an eye on, but probably not much more than that.
