On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Phillies dismissed manager Rob Thomson following a 9–19 start to the 2026 season. Despite leading the team to three straight 90-win seasons and a World Series appearance, the team’s early struggles became too much to ignore. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Thomson isn’t ruling out remaining with the organization in some capacity.

Philadelphia Phillies head coach Rob Thomson (49) makes a pitching change against the Atlanta Braves in the sixth inning at Truist Park.

“Rob Thomson says he wants to stay with the Phillies organization when the time is right, saying he was treated with class and dignity, and loves the city of Philadelphia,” Nightengale reported.

Nightengale followed up with another report highlighting Thomson’s graciousness toward the front office. “Classy Rob Thomson says he had no ill feelings towards Dave Dombrowski reaching out to Alex Cora on Sunday while he was still employed. ‘Dave and I have a close relationship, but that doesn’t stand in the way for him doing the right thing for the organization. I respect that.’”

Thomson previously spent 27 years with the New York Yankees as first-base coach, third-base coach, and bench coach. He left alongside Joe Girardi after the 2017 season, joining Girardi on the Phillies’ bench in 2018. When Philadelphia fired Girardi during the 2022 season, Thomson took over as manager, leading the team to the World Series that year and later earning the permanent job.

Even consecutive NL East division titles weren’t enough to save Thomson given the dreadful start. The Phillies are ten games below .500, having lost 11 of their last 12 games. Five of those losses and the lone win came against the red-hot Atlanta Braves, leaving the team in a deep early-season hole.

Bryce Harper was among many in the Phillies organization who praised Thomson as both a person and a coach, hinting that a reunion could happen in the near future.
