Following a string of frustrating near-misses in the transfer portal, Kentucky Basketball was desperate for a win and Mark Pope just delivered one. The Wildcats have rebounded by landing a commitment from Justin McBride, a high-upside offensive weapon coming off the best season of his college career. UK Sports Network broke the news first.

The addition is badly needed in the frontcourt, as there’s a very real chance McBride will start at the four when the 2026-27 college basketball season tips off.

The portal reality
Before diving into fit, let’s address the elephant in the room: McBride will be on his fourth team in four years, having started at Oklahoma State, transferred to Nevada, then played this past season at James Madison. In a different era, that would be a major red flag. But in the NIL and transfer-portal age, kids playing for five teams in five years will soon become standard. Players now move annually for better pay, more minutes, or even nicer weather. Coaches have to adapt, and Pope is doing exactly that by securing a player who fits what worked well for him in Year 1.

The return of the stretch four
McBride brings a true stretch-four option back to Lexington. In Year 1, Andrew Carr wasn’t great from deep, but defenses still had to respect him, which opened up passing lanes and kept the offense flowing. McBride is slightly undersized at 6-foot-7 but carries a sturdy 240-pound frame. He’ll be asked to use that strength to battle in the post and hold his own defensively, forcing opposing bigs to step out of the paint to guard his elite shooting.

BREAKING: James Madison forward Justin McBride has committed to Kentucky, per release. The 6'7 junior averaged 15.3 PPG and 5.6 RPG on 49.4% FG this season.

His offensive leap last season at James Madison was staggering: 15.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per night while shooting 40.0% from three. The year before at Nevada, he shot just 24.1% from deep, and 28.6% during his lone season at Oklahoma State. The hope now is that regression doesn’t follow.

Fixing last year’s mistakes
Pope has found another frontcourt option who fits his system seamlessly. This addition makes far more sense than some of last year’s experiments, when the offense bogged down because Mo Dioubate couldn’t shoot and Andrija Jelavic was miscast as a high-volume three-point shooter. McBride is built to step into that perimeter-shooting role and actually convert his looks. He was a four-star recruit, so the talent has always been there and his upward trajectory may continue.
