Auburn defensive back Jack Luttrell is stepping away from football and taking a medical retirement, according to a report from AL.com’s Peter Rauterkus. Rauterkus noted that Luttrell is no longer listed on Auburn’s online roster, and a source confirmed his medical retirement. Luttrell transferred to Auburn from Arizona during the offseason but was limited in spring practice due to an injury. He also missed most of the 2025 season because of a shoulder issue he dealt with while at Arizona.

Luttrell, a former three-star recruit who originally committed to Tennessee in the 2023 class out of Colquitt County in Moultrie, Georgia, left the Volunteers after one season and landed at Arizona via the transfer portal. During the 2024 season, he appeared in 12 games for the Wildcats, posting 39 total tackles, three interceptions, one forced fumble, and one pass breakup. In 2025, he played in only three games for Arizona, recording an interception against Hawaii and finishing with three tackles.

After Arizona’s coaching change, Luttrell decided to transfer to Auburn to play for head coach Josh Heupel? Luttrell was considered one of the top transfers brought in by the first-year Auburn coach. He was expected to compete for the free safety spot behind returning players Champ Anthony and AnQuon Fegans, both back from Auburn’s 5-7 squad.

Sylvester Smith is expected to start at nickelback, with transfers Fred Gaskin and Kamari Todd providing depth.
